Reiki Energy Healing is Used in Hospitals

Patricia Alandydy is an RN and a Reiki Master. She is the Assistant Director of Surgical Services at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. With the support of her Director Jocclyn King and CEO William Schuler, she has made Reiki services available to patients within the Surgical Services Department. This is one of the largest departments in the hospital and includes the operating room, Central Supply, the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, the Ambulatory Care Unit and the Fourth Floor where patients are admitted after surgery. During telephone interviews with pre-op patients, Reiki is offered along with many other services. If patients request it, Reiki is then incorporated into their admission the morning of surgery, and an additional 15-20 minute session is given prior to their transport to the operating room. Some Reiki has also been done in the operating room at Portsmouth Regional.

At hospitals and clinics across America, Reiki is beginning to gain acceptance as a meaningful and cost-effective way to improve patient care. "Reiki sessions cause patients to heal faster with less pain," says Marilyn Vega, RN, a private-duty nurse at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital in New York. [Reiki] accelerates recovery from surgery, improves mental attitude and reduces the negative effects of medication and other medical procedures.

Vega, a Reiki master, includes Reiki with her regular nursing procedures. Because the patients like Reiki, she has attracted a lot of attention from other patients through word of mouth, as well as from members of the hospital staff. Patients have asked her to do Reiki on them in the operating and recovery rooms. She has also been asked to do Reiki sessions on cancer patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in Manhattan, including patients with bone marrow transplants. Recognizing the value of Reiki in patient care, 6 doctors and 25 nurses have taken Reiki training with her.

Reiki has been verified by recent scientific experiments and researches, some medical doctors are considering the role it plays in the functioning of the immune system and the healing process. From January-June of 2002, approximately 1,480 Reiki sessions were provided at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut. Surveys show that Reiki had a positive impact by reducing stress/anxiety an average of 94%, nausea 80%, pain 78%, and improved sleep 86%. Many people are practicing techniques to improve their health such as meditation, exercise and improved diet. As this is done, a deeper awareness often develops concerning the flow of subtle energies in and around the body and the connection between these subtle energies and one's health. This developing awareness validates the ancient idea of 'life force energy' as the cause of health and its lack as the cause of illness. The existence of 'life force energy' and the necessity for it to flow freely in and around one's body to maintain health has been studied and acknowledged by health care practitioners as well as scientists.

Our body is composed not only of physical elements such as muscles, bones, nerves, arteries, organs, glands, etc.; it also has a subtle energy system through which 'life force energy' flows. This subtle energy system is composed of energy 'bodies' which surround our physical body and assist us in processing our thoughts and emotions. The energy bodies have energy centers called chakras, which work somewhat like valves that allow life force to circulate through the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. Dr. Mikao Usui

Dr. Mikao Usui, or Usui Sensei as he is called by his students in Japan, is the founder of the Usui System of Reiki. He was born August 15, 1865 in the village of Yago in the Yamagata district of Gifu prefecture, Japan. Usui Sensei had an avid interest in learning and worked hard at his studies. He traveled to Europe and China to further his education. His curriculum included medicine, psychology, and religion. It is thought that he was from a wealthy family, as in Japan only the wealthy could afford to send their children to school. Eventually he became the secretary to Pei Gotoushin, head of the department of health and welfare who later became the Mayor of Tokyo. The connections Usui Sensei made at this job helped him to become a successful businessman.

In 1914 Usui's personal and business life was failing. As a sensitive spiritualist, Usui Sensei had previously spent much time meditating at power spots on Mt. Kurama. So he decided to travel to this holy mountain, where he enrolled in Isyu Guo, a twenty-one-day training course. We do not know for certain what he was required to do during this training, but it is likely that fasting, meditation, chanting and prayers were part of the practice. In addition, we know there is a small waterfall on Mt. Kurama where even today people go to meditate. This meditation involves standing under the waterfall and allowing the waters to strike and flow over the top of the head, a practice which is said to activate the crown chakra. Japanese Reiki Masters think that Usui Sensei may have used this meditation as part of his practice. In any case, it was during the Isyu Guo training that the great Reiki energy entered his crown chakra. This greatly enhanced his healing abilities and he realized he had received a wonderful new gift - the ability to give healing to others without depleting his own energy!

Reiki in the West
After coming to the west, the Usui System of Natural Healing has evolved over time. In its current state, it is much more organized and structured than the simple, flexible, intuitive method practiced by Dr. Usui. The following is a description of the evolution of the Usui System of Reiki.

During his mystical experience on Mt. Kurama, Dr. Usui received the ability to do Reiki treatments. Later he added the Reiki Ideals, the three Reiki II symbols, hand positions and the attunement process. Dr. Hayashi developed a complex hand position system based on his experience as a medical doctor and from his experience working in his Reiki clinic. He also further developed the attunement process and may have been the one to add the master symbol. (Note that Dr. Usui and his organization the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai did not use a master symbol) Mrs. Takata added the foundation treatment which is a simplified version of what she learned from Dr. Hayashi. The foundation treatment consists of 4 hand positions on the abdomen area and 3 or 4 hand positions for the head. She also decided not to teach most of the techniques (now called Japanese Reiki techniques) she learned from Dr. Hayashi, thus simplifying the system for Westerners. (see How Mrs. Takata Practiced and Taught Reiki in the Spring 07 issue of Reiki News Magazine) She also added the fee structure previously mentioned. So while the lineage and is the same, going back to Dr. Usui, and the 3 symbols from Reiki II are the same as Dr. Usui taught, in many ways, the system of Reiki she taught was different than what Dr. Usui had originally created. The important thing is that her system is effective with the addition of the foundation treatment being her most important contribution to Reiki.

The required waiting periods between classes were added by several of Mrs. Takata's Masters after she passed on. Actually according to Mrs. Yamaguchi who became a Reiki teacher under Dr. Hayashi, Dr. Hayashi taught that Reiki treatments should be given for free. This is why he taught mostly to wealthy students who could afford to practice without charging money. So, while some say payment must be received, we know that this is not a requirement and that it is really up to the practitioner to decide if they want to charge a fee or not for Reiki treatments.

Takata said Reiki is an oral tradition and because of this didn’t allow her students to take notes or to tape record and she had no written handouts; neither did she write anything about how Reiki is to be taught. Because of this it became difficult to verify exactly how Reiki is to be practiced. This became especially problematic after she passed on. After Mrs. Takata's transition, a few teachers began making changes in the way they taught Reiki. Most of the changes were beneficial, and included the addition of knowledge and healing skills the teachers had learned from other systems or had acquired from inner guidance. However, some changes were restrictive, making it more difficult for students to progress. Some took the Third Degree and divided it into several small parts, calling each new part a new Degree and charging additional money. Often, the fact that they had modified the Takata system was not mentioned and when their students became teachers, they began teaching what they thought was pure Takata style Reiki and even calling it pure Usui Reiki when in fact it was not. In this way, many varieties of Reiki have developed with some thinking they have the only authentic version of Reiki when actually what they are teaching is a modified form. Much of the information on the web about the history of Usui Reiki and how it is taught and practiced has not been well researched and people are simply publishing anything they have heard without attempting to find the source or check references.

Reiki is a natural system for healing, stress reduction, and relaxation. It is based on the belief that life force energy or KI can be harnessed and used for the purpose of healing.Reiki seeks to remove blockages within the energy system it allows life force to run freely again restoring balance to the recipient and increasing the body's natural ability to heal itself. What Happens During A Reiki Treatment?

Receiving Reiki treatment is a very simple non-intrusive, yet, very powerful process. The practitioner will usually give a short explanation of what the treatment involves and ask for a few details about the client's medical history. Confidentiality is assured as required by the ethical standards of the Association.

A treatment lasts approximately one hour with the client lying down, fully clothed, on a treatment couch. If the client is unable to lie down the treatment can be given in a sitting or standing position. Restrictive items such as shoes and jewellery are usually removed. The treatment room will be warm, clean and comfortable. Soft music, candles and a blanket are provided to add to the client's comfort. There is no manipulation as Reiki is not massage. The practitioner will channel energy to the client through a sequence of hand positions on or above the back and front of the body and head. The practitioner will spend several minutes holding each position and more time on any specific areas of need. Reiki will go where it is most needed.

What Will I Experience During Treatment?

During a session many individuals report feeling sensations such as heat, tingling, coolness or throbbing or some see colours. However most people simply experience a sense of wellbeing and relaxation; some even fall asleep! Or sometimes a treatment can be energising: There is no right or wrong way to experience Reiki.

What Can Be Expected After A Treatment?

Directly after a Reiki session, you should allow yourself time to come fully back into your awareness. You may become so relaxed that you feel a little dazed. It is suggested to sit for a few minutes and sip a cool glass of purified water.

Soon after you may notice that you are detoxifying. You should increase your water and/or herbal tea intake so that the toxins are flushed out more readily. You may want to rest more, so allow time for that. Most people feel an improvement in their level of pain and a feeling of overall well being may be noticed.

You may begin to notice some improvement after the first session. The number and frequency of further treatment varies from person to person. In general acute problems heal faster than chronic problems. If your problem is of long standing it may require treatments over a longer period of time, however, you should feel free to make the decision about what treatment you wish to receive.

Reiki is truly holistic as it treats the whole person not the symptom. It is possible to heal at any level of being: physical, mental, emotional or spiritual.
